Background
Miffy, the world-famous white rabbit known as “Nijntje” in her native Netherlands, was created in 1955 by the celebrated illustrator and graphic designer Dick Bruna. Known for her minimalist aesthetic—defined by bold black outlines, a distinct primary color palette, and an iconic “X” for a mouth—Miffy has transcleded her origins as a picture book character to become a global symbol of childhood, simplicity, and design. Her stories have been translated into over 50 languages, touching on universal themes of curiosity, friendship, and family.
The Miffy 70th Anniversary Exhibition, titled “70 Years with Miffy,” is a major retrospective celebrating seven decades of the beloved character’s influence since her debut in 1955. The exhibition features approximately 200 items, including original drawings and sketches from all 32 Miffy picture books, some of which are being shown in Japan for the first time. The Hiroshima Museum of Art stop is a highlight of the national tour, offering fans a comprehensive look at Dick Bruna’s creative process and the evolution of Miffy’s design through the years in a setting known for its impressive collection of modern art.
